Chicana/o Studies is an interdisciplinary major focusing on the Mexican-origin population of the U.S., the second largest ethnic group in the nation. Students who major or minor in Chicana/o Studies have opportunities to select from a wide variety of courses in the humanities and social sciences as well as selected courses offered by affiliated faculty in the School of Education.

Students identify, in consultation of the chair, a thematic concentration for their major course of study. Tracks are flexible programs that you can design to meet your academic interests and career goals and can focus on areas such as the arts, health, government, and public service.

A "Spanish Language Proficiency Option" is offered to majors who are interested in using Spanish in their course work or for their research. This option, modeled on programs of foreign language study across the curriculum at other institutions, is aimed at students who have a strong interest in using the Spanish language proficiency they have acquired in meaningful contexts outside of foreign language courses.



The Major (60 units)
Declaring a major requires a completed major proposal (excel template) that meets these requirements:

      • PSYCH 75. Introduction to Cultural Psychology
      • SOC 147A/247A. Comparative Ethnic Conflict
      • SOC 148. Racial Identity
      • One single-group, core course that focuses on a non-Mexican origin group

  2. One Foundational Course
    • CHICANST 180E/SPANLIT 180E: Introduction to Chicana/o Studies
    • SOC 166. Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and Chicanos in American Society

  3. Additional 40 units from approved list
    • See the Stanford Bulletin for the current list.
    • Courses not listed as a thematic or cognate course may be counted toward the major or minor if approved by the Chair of the Chicana/o Studies Program.
